One of the best reasons to be cautious about just treating symptoms can be found in the Five Elements of
acupuncture. In acupuncture it is known that all the organs systems are inter-connected. The Five Element chart shown
here shows the basic interconnections. The lines on the outside show the energizing or creating energy flow. The lines
inside show the organs systems that limit the energy flow. Ideally, both balance and there is no pain or illness. Ideally,
they would naturally adjust each other to maintain health through a harmonious interaction even through variances within
the different organ systems. However, if in balance in the form of illness or pain occurs then you may need assistance to
restore the natural state.

When I asked my teacher about this he found a member of my staff who had a dry consistent cough. He read her pulses
then proceeded to explain what is shown below. Simply stated the Lung was excessive, too much energy, causing
the cough which , in turn, was weakening her Liver. He told her to eat liver and further to have all the family
members living with her to eat some at the same time (same day).

He explained that eating the liver would naturally stimulate and cause more energy to move into the Fire Element and in so doing would limit the Metal Element which would check the Lung and restore balance as shown in the image below. Since then I have suggested this idea to many people who have had that dry cough and if they prefer not to eat the meat they can buy the desiccated liver at any health food store and take it as a supplement. This has worked in every situation, however, if you need to repeat this more than once or have a fever pain and so forth see a qualified professional.
