Many years ago a knowledgeable doctor took time to teach me some useful acupuncture techniques. He was very
fond of this activity and had used it many times to heal himself from a variety of things from feeling down to an
eye infection. I am neither an expert in this or much of an artist but I will do my best to explain his process here.
It can be done almost any time and he stated it improves overall health with continued use.
In acupuncture it is thought energy moves through invisible pathways called meridians. There is a known pathway on the skin that corresponds to the organ but there is also a pathway inside which can be different. Along the meridians are
various control and feedback or reflex points. When an organ gets distressed key points on the skin become tender and as the
organ recovers the point(s) will become less sensitive. Normally the energy moves through the meridians much
like water flowing through a hose. However, if you stand on the hose you restrict the flow and in a like manor a
restriction in your energy flow reduces flow to every organ downstream from that point. From his point of view
only an organ low in energy could become sick or diseased and pain was simply an accumulation or build
up of the energy.

He knew the Central or brain meridian came up to the lower side of the mouth and that the Governing or
spinal meridian came up the back over the head and stopped in the upper part of the mouth. As long as the tongue
stayed flat in the mouth the energy was pushed through the meridians in their normal pathway. However, if you
curl the tongue up you join the two pathways creating a new condition where the meridians are now fed
directly from these two streams. He believed this would balance many conditions and restore health
naturally. He thought 15-20 minutes a day during a meditation or quiet time would balance most minor
health issues. It should only be done when the mouth is moist not when it is dry. The only time he
avoided using this was immediately after eating because it would interrupt the normal digestion. He said
waiting 30 minutes should be sufficient.

As you curl your tongue the energy systems are fed directly not through the previous system. In doing this you can restore the normal energy flow which in turn restores the organ/tissue health.
